The Fall of the House of Usher Is Netflixs Literary Orgy of Death

the fall of the house of usher review

There are familiar character names, directly absorbed plotlines, overt and subtle visual nods. After four series for Netflix, including The Haunting Of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Flanagan has really found his confident groove. He’s as adept as ever at creating a spooky mood, but his storytelling is defter than it’s been before. Past projects have had a bit of sentimentality about them, but Usher doesn’t allow itself huggy endings or nice guys to root for. Instead, it has the harder job of reckoning with apparently irredeemable people, asking what brought them here and how monsters are created. The Ushers may not elicit much sympathy, but they do (mostly) earn some understanding.

How does it compare to Mike Flanagan’s other Netflix shows?

Poe’s infamous short story that provides a basis for this work possesses an additional affinity with Flanagan because it shares his obsession with family. Mike Flanagan has been one of Netflix’s most dependable showrunners, expertly crafting one horror series after another since The Haunting Of Hill House in 2018. His newest series uses the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to build a tale of a family who built a pharmaceutical powerhouse under somewhat sketchy circumstances, and a patriarch who sees all of his children die in the span of two weeks. Like some of Flanagan’s previous work — Hill House is based on a Shirley Jackson novel and Bly Manor a story by Henry James — House of Usher is the kind of adaption that uses the source material as a skeleton to build something entirely new upon.

The Rules of the Game

Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag.

Of course, that tragedy is more for the patriarch than it is for us, and their deaths, while instrumental to the story, aren’t really what it’s about. Though their respective demises come in varying degrees and patterns of awful, almost every member of the House of Usher is despicable in their own way. Imagine watching Succession and seeing each of the series’ miserable players get what they deserve in the most lethal way possible? That’s the type of delicious schadenfreude that The Fall of the House of Usher offers. We watch on as each victim – Usher or otherwise – makes their proverbial bed despite the grace of the literal warnings offered.

The series brings to Poe’s work a modern twist, as the feuding members of the Usher family get killed off one by one. So, class, cue up your streaming devices and let’s take a dive into this list of the chilling Poe references in The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan tends to work with a core rotating ensemble of actors, similar to American Horror Story’s anthology approach to recurring casts. This series, they all commit themselves completely to the conceit that they’re in some kind of Poe-ian shadow world, effortlessly dropping off-kilter lines from Poe poems and novels alongside zings and barbs about NDAs and PR spin. Each episode owes something vaguely thematic to a different well-known Poe short story, with the manner of death unfolding in a Final Destination-like hodgepodge of calamity. The gruesome deaths of the Ushers (a clear analogue of the Sacklers) are supernatural retribution for America’s opioid crisis, which Usher helped, um, usher in.

Netflix’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Is a Gruesome Family Drama Wrapped in a Web of Edgar Allan Poe: TV Review

Mike Flanagan‘s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which earns its title from an 1839 Edgar Allen Poe story, showcases the demise of a family who, after being afforded every opportunity, eventually pays the price for their rampant monstrosity. While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal. Even something as seemingly simple as an ignored text message becomes a powerfully tragic moment, full of both terror and heartbreak. That combination, of course, is exactly what Flanagan is known for, and it remains strong in House of Usher...

In Poe's original short story, an unnamed narrator visits his old friend Roderick Usher, who has fallen ill along with his twin sister Madeline—the last surviving members of a once prominent family. The nature of their illness is never disclosed, but Roderick appears to be going mad, convinced his fate is tied to the Usher house—and there is an ominous crack starting from the roof running down the front of the house. Roderick accidentally entombs Madeline alive, believing she has died, and one dark stormy night, she re-emerges and attacks him in revenge. As the twins expire and the narrator flees in terror, the entire house splits in two and sinks into a nearby lake. It's pure Gothic horror, a genre that inspired Poe's many short stories and poetry in the early 19th century. Though enjoyable, the middle episodes of “The Fall of the House of Usher” do drag a bit.

When Dupin gets to Roderick’s house, the same one he grew up in, the senior Usher tells him that he’s ready to admit to all of it. He means the fraud and other charges that Dupin has brought against him and his company, Fortunado Pharmaceuticals. But he also wants to tell him about who killed all six of his children over the past two weeks. He had his six children — Frederick (Henry Thomas), Camille (Kate Siegel), Napoleon aka “Leo” (Rahul Kohli), Tamerlane (Samantha Sloyan), Victorine (T’Nia Miller) and Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota) with five different women. But because of the way he was brought up, in a family of exclusion, they’re all welcome, if they keep the family’s secrets in the family. Mike Flanagan returns to form in The Fall of the House of Usher, delivering a deliciously macabre and contemporary reimagining of the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works. Trucco’s character is Rufus Griswold, a name shared with the 19th century scribe whose reflections on Poe after the latter’s death helped shape our possibly incorrect perception of the author as an opioid-addicted madman, which adds a layer of irony to Flanagan’s Sackler-esque prism.

The foundation for the anthology is established by the gothic cloth animation of Emma De Swaef & Marc James Roels, who previously orchestrated the colonization mini-anthology short “This Magnificent Cake! ” Their eye for towering sets, intricate stark detail, and characters with tiny eyes and mouths continues here, with a slow burn tale about a family that suffers from a Faustian homeowner bargain. The father Raymond (Matthew Goode) makes a deal with “an architect of great renown” that he runs into the woods named Mr. Van Schoonbeek (Barney Pilling), who offers them a new mansion and furnishings, for free. The only catch, that they are aware of at least, is that they must give up their current home. Raymond jumps the opportunity as a means of status, to have the nicest house in the area, and make others jealous.

The second belongs to Henry Thomas as Freddie, the maligned eldest child who channels his familial resentment and insecurity into malevolent domestic abuse as his siblings start dying, culminating in a classic, shall we say, stroke of irony. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) has spent decades trying to nail the siblings on the company's various shady business practices and has finally managed to bring the Ushers to trial. The family is ably defended by their dour lawyer/fixer, Arthur Gordon Pym (Mark Hamill), aka the "Pym Reaper," and it looks like they might once again escape any real consequences for their role in the opioid epidemic.

The streaming giant has moved in recent years to making fewer seasons per series, and frequently canceling shows before they’ve finished telling their respective stories. Flanagan technically doesn’t make an ongoing series, but rather writes and directs various miniseries that tend to feature a lot of the same actors, like Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Rahul Kohli, and his wife Kate Siegel. The different projects — including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass — aren’t always tonally identical, but all fit somewhere along the horror spectrum.

the fall of the house of usher review

The narrative shifts away from the motivations and desires of the Usher children, focusing more on Roderick and Madeline as perpetrators of the opioid epidemic. This element of the series was often too on the nose, and much less compelling than the random displays of immorality and wickedness that make the Ushers rotten to the core. Since there are more than a couple of fictional representations of the Saclker family in media, the show would’ve been even stronger had it not leaned so heavily into those story fragments, and remained aligned instead with the “Succession” aspects of the series. Also, the framework of the Usher legacy is most poignant when Flanagan shines a light on the twins’ ambitions, even as teens and young adults, as well as their unbridled loyalty to one another. Broken up into eight chapters, the six middle episodes of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” each named for a terrifying Poe tale, illustrate the death of one of the Usher children. Fans of creator Mike Flanagan know that his entire body of work sits within the horror genre, but this show is more sinister than chilling.

Miranda Lambert The House That Built Me Lyrics

Growing up, Lambert and her family went through a difficult time when her parents’ private investigation company failed. Mama cut out pictures of houses for years. From 'Better Homes and Garden' magazine.Plans were drawn, concrete poured,And nail by nail and board by boardDaddy gave life to mama's dream. They essentially became homeless, staying with family and friends until they found an old house, which was about to be bulldozed. They all lived in one room while slowly fixing the home — adding windows, doors, and floor-to-ceiling repairs. Douglas told The Tennessean that Shamblin came to him with the song idea while at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in the early 200s.

When Lambert's parents first heard the song, they couldn't believe she didn't write it. That's because it so closely mirrored a painful point in their lives that it felt like a page right out of her diary. Miranda Lambert was 26 when she first heard "The House That Built Me." Douglas and Shamblin initially figured a male would sing the tune, so they sent it over to Scott Hendricks, who has a track record of finding the hits in Nashville.

Hendricks included it on a CD of potential songs for his client, Blake Shelton. At that point in her career, Lambert already established herself as a fiery newcomer with a big Texas attitude. Her previous singles included "Kerosene" and "Gunpowder & Lead," both energetic songs with a take-no-prisoners vibe. Lambert performed the song during the 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards on April 18, 2010, and received a standing ovation. At the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011, she won the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Lambert’s reaction came from the connection she felt to the lyrics that Douglas and Shamblin had written.

"The House That Built Me" is a country ballad in the key of F major driven primarily by acoustic guitar with steel guitar fills. The song's female narrator describes returning, as an adult, to the house that she grew up in, and asking the person who now lives in the house if she could step inside and take a look around.

She refers to it as "the house that built [her]," because of all the memories that she had of growing up within its walls. Even now, eight years later, "The House That Built Me" remains a staple in Lambert's catalog. In it, Lambert gets off a tour bus and tours her childhood home, now owned by another family. “The House That Built Me” went on to sit at the number one position on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, receive a Platinum certification, and win the Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy Award in 2011. Safe to say, this song not only moved Lambert but country music fans everywhere. The Lambert family eventually moved into a rental home and started rebuilding their lives as well as the home itself.

Lambert also captured Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Music Video of the Year from the Academy of Country Music awards. She took home Song of the Year and Music video of the year from the CMA Awards. "We were so convinced we had a classic, we'd get together for years and think, 'What is wrong with it? Why isn't it resonating?'" Douglas says. Eventually, they realized they were trying to put too much story in the original version.

That house was the house that built Miranda Lambert into the person she is today. The lyrics also ring true to the details of Lambert’s life growing up in the house that built her. Lambert’s dog was buried in by the house, (And I bet you didn’t know under that live oak / My favorite dog is buried in the yard) and her bedroom was upstairs (Up those stairs in that little back bedroom / Is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar). Lambert was dating Shelton at the time, and she heard this early version of “The House That Built Me.” Her reaction to the song was immediate and visceral, which then changed the trajectory of the song’s future.

Carla Thomas became the first woman to achieve a Top 10 hit on the Hot 100 with a song she wrote herself when "Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes)" reached the chart's top tier in 1961. In addition to these verses, Douglas and Shamblin ensured that “The House That Built Me” rang with a sense of universality in chorus. “When you co-write a song, you each dig into your own heart for where you’re coming from,” Shamblin explained to The Boot about the experience.

Just like all those "10-year overnight success stories," the song that took seven years to write and found its perfect artist by happenstance became an instant classic.

Miranda Lambert

But when they started sending the song out to trusted sources, they got crickets. The Canadian superstar talks about his sudden rise to fame, and tells the stories behind his hits "Sunglasses At Night," "Boy In The Box" and "Never Surrender." "True" by Spandau Ballet is about chief songwriter Gary Kemp's unrequited love for Altered Images singer and Gregory's Girl star Clare Grogan.

"The House That Built Me" is a country ballad in the key of F major driven primarily by acoustic guitar with steel guitar fills. The song's female narrator describes returning, as an adult, to the house that she grew up in, and asking the person who now lives in the house if she could step inside and take a look around.

Including the crucial addition of the line, "If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave — I won't take nothing but a memory." The Devo song "Freedom Of Choice" is about mindless consumerism - how people like to make frivolous choices, but otherwise want to be told what to do. He said, ‘Hey, let’s revisit this song.’ We finally got back together to work out some of the holes, and the song really came into focus then.

Topping Rose House, Bridgehampton Updated 2024 Prices

The mole was slightly bitter, almost like baking chocolate, and balances the sweetness of the ice cream, and the garlic’s zing. If you come to The Stinking Rose, give it a try. How often do you get a chance to eat garlic ice cream? Also sampled was the Chocolate Truffle Mousse Cake. The mousse cake was a heavy, thick mousse that sits at the bottom of your stomach. The mousse was presented in a cylindrical shape, dusted with coco powder.

Since then, the service has slipped, the food has leaned too much on the garlic gimmick, and the overall experience (tired decor, noisy ambiance)left me disappointed. I won't be back, and won't recommend it except to confirmed garlic fanatics. Topping Rose has three room types scattered across the grounds, and each unit is equally stylish and contemporary with attention paid to luxe details. The House King features gray walls with white crown molding and wall paneling.

There is not a space in the entire restaurant not covered with art, murals, paintings, pictures, wine bottles, sculptures, etc. Throughout dinner, I stared at four garlic cloves that were painted in Warhol-esque fashion. For those who like to dine in quiet, understated surroundings, The Stinking Rose may be sensory overload.

The parent company of Google also said it will start paying a dividend to investors and authorized a program to buy back up to $70 billion of its stock, a signal of how much cash it’s generating. My husband always wanted to got to The Stinking Rose, so I surprised him for his birthday. The glass of German wine I had was so great that I had to get another. My salmon was absolutely delicious and my friends ribs were fall-off-the-bone.

There were five slices in the oval shaped pizzette, plenty for two. The combination was both earthy from the generous portion of mushrooms and asparagus, and mild from the subtle mozzarella cheese. Garlic remained in the background for this dish. The crust at the edges was crisp and tasty, but was a bit soggy in the middle. The Stinking Rose Salad was also large enough for two, tossed, and served family style in a white serving dish. The bright green butter lettuce was cool and crunchy, with a generous portion of sweet cherry tomatoes that complemented the bitterness of the butter lettuce.

A generous helping of the Garlic Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes (what did you expect?) flanked one side of the chop, with caramelized apples on the other. Sauced on top of the chop, and on the bottom of the entire plate, was a sweet Garlic relish. The chop itself was lightly seasoned and had gentle smokey undertones.

I’m not sure if garlic is addictive, but when I stared at the first item on the dessert menu, it didn’t seem so strange. I felt as if I needed a second opinion before diving headfirst into this venture. So I asked our server Agnes her thoughts, “People either love it or hate it. I love it, I think its great.” I felt strangely obligated to try it. The generous portion is served in a chilled blue ice cream dish/cocktail glass.

The food was fantastic and the ambiance was great because you were able to have privacy. I highly recommend this restaurant if you love garlic and you are going straight home afterwards. The entrees of Fresh Black Linguine & Clams and the Porterhouse Pork Chop came next. The linguine & clams was a superb presentation. A mound of jet-black pasta sat in the middle of a white pasta bowl, a visually engaging contrast.

The dark chocolate was not too sweet as to overpower the rich flavor. On the side, was an ample scoop of vanilla custard. It was more yellowish in color than your average scoop of vanilla ice cream, and was sweeter than most ice creams. Both desserts are a fantastic way to end a meal. The Porterhouse Pork Chop was a massive bone-in chop, placed smack dab in the middle of the plate.

If you do not like the garlic plant, garlic smell, or most importantly, the taste of garlic, please move on and choose another restaurant. For those who have remained, and especially garlic lovers, welcome to garlic heaven. I love the food, the residences and the space overall. He bought the home back in 1999 for $1.2 million located in a gated golf community known as Country Club of the South. The 10,823-square-foot home built in 1988 features an open floor plan and has been fully remodeled.

Character descriptions

Consciousness, created from scanning people's social media posts and more. In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore." She's first present tending bar when Roderick and Madeline stop in on New Year's Eve 1979, and we don't know what's going on with them, but we know they're nervous about something. Throughout the rest of the series, Verna continues to show up—more than 40 years later, always looking exactly the same as the day she met them.

About Usher’s Georgia Mansion

An ambitious and driven man, Roderick expects the most out of his six children, giving them access to every resource imaginable — except his fatherly affection. The Fall of the House of Usher is a haunted house of a show filled with the ghosts of Mike Flanagan’s past casts. You’ll recognize a number of famous faces from projects like The Midnight Club, Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House, and more in this wicked horror series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

About Downtown Los Angeles

BY THE TIME you reach the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, the latest of Netflix's horror limited series from writer/director Mike Flanagan, there have been a lot of scares, a lot of violence, and a lot of lore. But, still, a few lingering things remain that need to click in order for the series—based on the collected writings of Edgar Allen Poe—to really all fall into place. English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names. When the young and trendy Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) decides to host an exclusive sex-and-drugs party at one of dad’s old factories in an abbey, readers of The Masque of the Red Death will know it’s going to be a gruesome scene.

What did the very end of The Fall of the House of Usher mean?

Roderick initially works with Dupin to acquire confidential documents from Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, exposing the company's malfeasance in clinical trials. Roderick plans to testify in court that his signature has been forged on these papers, exposing the company's wrongdoing. However, when Roderick takes the stand, he surprising confesses that he was actually the one who signed the papers, undermining Dupin's case. He claims to have been coerced into lying about his signatures, resulting in his arrest for perjury. The betrayal is devastating for Annabel, Roderick's wife, who had hoped her husband would do the right thing.

Its proprietor, Roderick Usher, had been one of my boon companions in boyhood; but many years had elapsed since our last meeting. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country—a letter from him—which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder which oppressed him—and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said—it was the apparent heart that went with his request—which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons. She possessed the warmth and moral compass of Annabel Lee, he thought, the “best of her without a broken heart.” She’s the one who called 911 and saved her mom from her father’s brutality.

The antique volume which I had taken up was the “Mad Trist” of Sir Launcelot Canning; but I had called it a favourite of Usher's more in sad jest than in earnest; for, in truth, there is little in its uncouth and unimaginative prolixity which could have had interest for the lofty and spiritual ideality of my friend. It was, however, the only book immediately at hand; and I indulged a vague hope that the excitement which now agitated the hypochondriac, might find relief (for the history of mental disorder is full of similar anomalies) even in the extremeness of the folly which I should read. Could I have judged, indeed, by the wild over-strained air of vivacity with which he hearkened, or apparently hearkened, to the words of the tale, I might well have congratulated myself upon the success of my design.

(Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies.

Roderick and Madeline met this mysterious woman on a fateful night in their past. Feast your eyes on a new clip above and learn more about the limited series below. To secure their fortune — and future — two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one. Poe was often dismissed by contemporary literary critics because of the unusual content and brevity of his stories. When his work was critically evaluated, it was condemned for its tendencies toward Romanticism.

She shapeshifts, and knows everything, always letting the Usher children know exactly what the universe needs them to know before their time is up. Even before the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, it's abundantly clear that Verna (Carla Gugino) is no mere human being. But Verna (which, if you notice, is an anagram of RAVEN) represents some kind of devil or adjacent otherworldly force, a harbinger of death who exists only to tempt and test the ethics and morality of those who need testing. As we approach the finale of The Fall of the House of Usher, after learning of Frederick's (Henry Thomas) grisly death in the penultimate episode, it would seem that we've finally caught up with the present, where Roderick sits, drinking expensive cognac and speaking with Dupin.

The serene and contemplative environment is surrounded by an abundance of street art murals, which have been kept in their original locations, creating a juxtaposition of the site’s local history with its new life. The open-air courtyard and garden won the 2019 Landscape Architecture category of the 49th Los Angeles Architectural Awards. For groups of 10 or more people, Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles offers guided tours Tuesday through Thursday of the exhibitions currently on view.

De Grey is particularly enthusiastic about an outdoor performance space currently under construction that aims to reinforce the building’s reputation for reaching out to the public. Connected with the opera house and protected by the solar canopy, this outdoor square will continue a tradition of pop concerts and fiestas that for decades have attracted as many as 5,000 people a night.

The firm clad the Winspear’s concrete drum with bright ruby PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers laminated between two sheets of glass. By illuminating the colorful skin from both the back and front, the designers were able to create bold signage in the daytime and at night, when the house is washed in a red glow of light. The entrance to the Winspear Opera House features the Annette and Harold Simmons Signature Glass Facade, which ascends 60 feet creating a seamless visual appearance between the vibrant red glass panels of the McDermott Performance Hall and the surrounding Sammons Park. The principal performance space, Margaret McDermott Performance Hall, features gold leaf covered balconies, retractable screens, a spacious fly-tower, a three-square stage with generous side and rear stage areas allowing for opera to be more easily performed in repertoire. The modern Moody Foundation Chandelier showcases more than 300 LED rods that retract into the ceiling prior to performances. This ascension is accompanied by music specially commissioned by composer Philip Glass.

He was appointed artistic director of the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen at age 26, and successfully oversaw the company moving into a new grand opera house in Copenhagen. Mr. Conlon is an enthusiastic advocate of public scholarship and cultural institutions as forums for the exchange of ideas and inquiry into the role music plays in our shared humanity and civic life. At LA Opera, he leads pre-performance talks, drawing upon musicology, literary studies, history, and social sciences to contemplate—together with his audience—the enduring power and relevance of opera and classical music in general. Additionally, he frequently collaborates with universities, museums, and other cultural institutions, and works with scholars, practitioners, and community members across disciplines. His appearances throughout the country as a speaker on a variety of cultural and educational topics are widely praised.

Additional highlights of his season include returning to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to lead Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and conducting Wagner’s Lohengrin at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He also returns to Switzerland’s Bern Symphony, where he is Principal Guest Conductor, to lead three programs including Schubert and Beethoven symphonies, a celebratory New Years Day concert, and a season finale with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Since his debut that year with La Traviata, he has conducted 67 different operas and more than 455 performances to date with the company. The Winspear stands in a long line of opera houses that reserve innovation for the exterior rather than for the theater inside. Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House (1973) in Australia, and more recently Snøhetta’s Norwegian National Opera House in Oslo (2009) come to mind in this regard. Most of these schemes employ the horseshoe configuration established by Carlo Fontana in Venice more than 300 years ago and championed by Essert today; one of the few exceptions is Zaha Hadid’s unbuilt Cardiff Bay Opera House (1994–96).

He is a professor of opera directing at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and the executive director of Opera Project Columbus in Ohio. In the summer of 2022, he joined the Frank R. Brownell III Apprentice Program at Des Moines Metro Opera, where he sung the role of Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and covered the role of the Lawyer in Porgy and Bess. Alan Williams recently received his specialist and master's degrees in voice performance from the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Daniel Washington. He received his undergraduate degree in 2018 from Northern Arizona University, where he studied with Dr. Judith Cloud. In the summer of 2023, she reprised Lilacs with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival at Wolf Trap, and she also made her role debut as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with Wolf Trap Opera.

More specifically, the property is situated in the suburbs of Alpharetta, Georgia (One of the Atlanta Area’s richest neighborhoods) in an exclusive guard-gated gold community. The fantastic design elements of the house make it seem as if it’s just jumped out of the covers of a popular interior magazine hotel. Not one to shy away from the conventionally accepted norms, Usher’s home features a foyer and master bedroom with black walls. Interestingly, designers now consider black to be all the rage because of it’s uniquely dark yet stylistic elements. The formal dining room is quite colorful with shades of deep purple, fine curtains, floral print wallpapers and valances. Usher also currently maintains a 10,823-square-foot mansion in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Meet the Cursed Kin of ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Cast

What was it—I paused to think—what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? It was a mystery all insoluble; nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered. I was forced to fall back upon the unsatisfactory conclusion, that while, beyond doubt, there are combinations of very simple natural objects which have the power of thus affecting us, still the analysis of this power lies among considerations beyond our depth.

In film and television

Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher! It was with difficulty that I could bring myself to admit the identity of the wan being before me with the companion of my early boyhood. And now in the mere exaggeration of the prevailing character of these features, and of the expression they were wont to convey, lay so much of change that I doubted to whom I spoke. The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eve, above all things startled and even awed me. The silken hair, too, had been suffered to grow all unheeded, and as, in its wild gossamer texture, it floated rather than fell about the face, I could not, even with effort, connect its Arabesque expression with any idea of simple humanity.

Cast and characters

One of the phantasmagoric conceptions of my friend, partaking not so rigidly of the spirit of abstraction, may be shadowed forth, although feebly, in words. A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption or device. Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendour. “Her decease,” he said, with a bitterness which I can never forget, “would leave him (him the hopeless and the frail) the last of the ancient race of the Ushers.” While he spoke, the lady Madeline (for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread—and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings.

The chef’s kitchen area landscape is laden with a white marble backsplash, a couple of Viking utilities, a built-in banquet and gray cabinets to boot. The living room has dark wood floors, a tiled fireside and stenciled wooden beams. The house was built in 1926 and features a five-bedroom setup, six bathrooms and a couple of decent finishes.

An irrepressible tremour gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, hearkened—I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me—to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavoured to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment. The worldly reason, however, assigned for this singular proceeding, was one which I did not feel at liberty to dispute. The brother had been led to his resolution (so he told me) by consideration of the unusual character of the malady of the deceased, of certain obtrusive and eager inquiries on the part of her medical men, and of the remote and exposed situation of the burial-ground of the family. I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase, on the day of my arrival at the house, I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural, precaution.

However, Flanagan is smart enough to shift the Poe narratives ever so slightly for a modern audience. His version of The Tell-Tale Heart is a modern gem, and “The Gold-Bug” is reimagined as a new brand for the Usher company. But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege.

La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy. Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher. He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking.

While the details are unclear, there is a pact between Madeline, Roderick, and Verna that seemingly involves death. Madeline attempts to alter the terms of their agreement, even resorting to violence, but Verna proves to be resilient. The situation leaves Madeline pondering the cryptic words of their contract, suggesting that death is an integral part of their deal.Meanwhile, Frederick, another Usher family member, manipulates the situation to position himself for the CEO position within Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. He subjects his wife, Morelle, to further torment and disfigurement, crossing the line even for Verna. In an unexpected turn of events, Verna ensures Frederick's demise by lacing his cocaine with a paralyzing drug.

On the other hand, there are plenty of strange things about the Usher family. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced. Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family.
